The footbridge over the A5183 at Markyate recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. The bridge was originally constructed after much lobbying by parents to allow their children to cross the then very busy A5 London – Midlands trunk road. With the advent of new roads this road was re-categorised and handed over to Hertfordshire County Council. Listening to the views of local residents the bridge has been given a complete refresh with new surrounding pavements and verges where spring flowers have been planted. The refreshed bridge now even has a plaque to commemorate the origin of the bridge and its promoter.
Local Conservative Councillor, Terry Douris, promoted the refurbishment commented “it took a while to work our way through the complexities of the plan, but it is finished, local people love it and it will be a valuable asset for the next 60 years”
